Energy and Environmental Sustainability Solutions for Megacities - E2S2

This program is a major collaboration between Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), one of the leading universities in China, and National University of Singapore (NUS). This is supported under the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) framework to study sustainable solutions for coupled problems targeted at already-stressed megacities and serve as inputs for strategic policy making and near real-time environmental monitoring and response.

E2S2, hosted under NUS Environmental Research Institute, aims to develop a platform to facilitate the understanding, design, and implementation of infrastructure and sustainability solutions for coupled problems in future cities. It will start with two sites of different sizes and complexities, in this case a megacity like Shanghai and a land-scarce city like Singapore. It also proposes to develop capabilities needed in solving coupled problems characteristic of complex city systems. These include sensing, modeling, data mining, systems modeling, carefully designed test bedding systems and adaption, and scalability of coupled solutions to a variety of environments. This will then allow us to adapt solutions to other cities with different complexities and sizes based on a calibrated modeling platform and through subsequent smaller-scale test-bedding.

Coupled System A (CS-A):
Waste management in megacities for sustainability and energy recovery

The major focus is to develop and test-bed a novel sustainable waste management and resource recovery system suitable for future cities based on the concept of a decentralized hybrid biological and chemical waste-to-energy system. This project will examine a coupled problem at the nexus of energy and waste (with impacts on health and environment).

Coupled System B (CS-B):
Challenges of emerging contaminants on environmental sustainability in megacities

The second project focuses on developing and test-bedding an integrative sensing, modeling and assessment system to identify and understand the fate of emerging pollutants in future cities, including the impacts of such pollutants on the health of ecological systems. This project will examine a coupled problem at the nexus of environment (water and air) and public health (with impact on waste management).

Support Platform 1 (SP-1):
Mission-oriented system model for megacity sustainability

The first support platform aims to develop a mission-oriented system model for coupled problems in megacity sustainability, focusing on unraveling and understanding the complexity of coupled systems as well as test bedding based on calibration and evaluation of data, with the aim to build capability to extrapolate to other cities.

Support Platform 2 (SP-2):
Distributed clouds: Peta-scale urban sensing and data management

The second support platform will develop the computational capability in a peta-scale level for urban sensing and data management, supporting the large amounts of data that will be generated from CS-A and CS-B and linking it to the models to be developed in SP-1.
